*** out of **** Sam Peckinpah's "Straw Dogs" was released in 1971 and was immediately misjudged, seemingly at the very moment of its arrival. It sent movie-goers either running for the hills - never to look back again - or scratching their chins in an attempt to find some sort of intellectual meaning for what they had just witnessed. The film itself was the story of a mathematician … more
Banderas is what drew me to this film. And he puts on an excellent performance here. In fact, all of the actors and actresses did well. It is an excellent film too but it is still getting a -2 rating from me. The problem, as far as I'm concerned, lies in the scripting. It is psychologically repulsive and unhealthy as far as I'm concerned. Somewhat like The Black Swan which many … more

Not all sap is bad ... What rescued this from the terminally sappy was all the appearances by the real coaches. I'm not a huge sports fan but have lived in the SEC most of my life so it was a but of cute realism that worked.
This is the largest budget movie where the camera almost never moves. I mean how much does it cost to pan or actually zoom instead of cut? Also the fight scenes lasted about a minute combined so apparently all the money went into CGI wolves and glitter (last time I checked glitter was still pretty cheap unless they have invented a kind that you can in fact wash off). Finally, acting? Hello, I'm convinced … more

Given how much water is involved in the flick I expected to need to make several trips to the bathroom. I didnt but the movie was so bad I really really wanted to have to go.

**** out of **** Sam Peckinpah's "Straw Dogs" is a stirring, often times riveting thriller; a film about violence, emotional destruction, social discrimination, and the limits of man. We've all seen movies like this for sure; there have been as many copycats as there have been predecessors. But who can put much blame on a filmmaker for having a keen eye for the violent acts … more
A well done yet still completely unnecessary remake of the Peckinpah classic, its only major flaw is the thematic shift from man's internal struggle between civilized man and his predominantly savage nature to the more simplistic elements of class warfare.
A genre blend that starts off strong despite the adherence to a multitude of western cliches, it all falls flat in the second act with the introduction of a lazy plot twist created for no other reason than to save the screenwriters the trouble of advancing the story through dialogue and character development, and give them an easy out for a typically lame Hollywood Happy Ending.
I'm a firm believer in that you shouldn't review something if you don't know the full story (or at least the background), like a person who doesn't play video games reviewing a video game movie or criticizing a Sci-fi film because you don't understand something or a better example me reviewing the Watchmen Movie. See i never read the graphic novel … more
Half a star out of **** Uwe Boll's "Alone in the Dark" has nothing to do with the somewhat-forgotten and underrated 1982 slasher film of the same name. It is, instead, a big-screen adaptation of the popular video game franchise; which comes to no surprise, since Boll is infamous for merging video games with cinema and creating the most repulsively bad and intellectually assaultive … more
PedroPedroPedro AlmodovarPedro Almodovar is one of my favorite directors and story tellers. His newest film, The Skin I Live In once more proves his genius. I don't want to say too much about the story because it would be wrong to give too much away. But Almodovar never ceases to amaze me. His movies are always complex. His characters are always off center. And his … more

Hello Lunchers! Anyone interested in a little further insight into Pedro Almodovar's latest, THE SKIN I LIVE IN, should check out my interview with the film's star, Antonio Banderas. We chat about what it was like for the one-time collaborators to reunite after 20 years. http://blacksheepreviews.blogspot.com/2011/1...s-antonio-banderas.html Thanks … more
It's the new super-sexy Express Review format that celebrates A.D.D. Paul is the worst comedy of 2011, if not the worst film, period. I didn't fall for the "two British guys travelling must be gay" gag the first time or even the twentieth time it was used. Making the Baptists look dumb didn't quite do it for me either. I did smile once when I remembered I still … more
A group of five commandos rob a payroll base for 3.5 million dollars in Camp Pendleton. They made a successful get away by hijacking a small plane, plus taking the pilot named Al (David James Campbell) and his daughter Kellie (Victoria Christian) hostage. Things appeared to be looking up for them until one of their number decides to betray them, by throwing the money off the plane and parachuting … more
In the town of Harmony, Tom Hannigan (Jensen Ackles) was responsible for a mining accident that took place which left several men buried. Harry Warden (Richard John Walters) was the only one to survive the ordeal, by killing the other workers for their oxygen. He then fell into a coma for a year. When he finally awakened, he went back to the scene of the accident armed with a pickaxe, dressed in miners … more

No one wants to become an addict to damage himself. Everyone becomes addicted to something because of the promise of becoming hipper, cooler, suaver, smarter and perhaps even more charismatic. Now let me stop myself from ripping off the prologue of BATMAN VENOM, and let us discuss director Neil Burger’s “Limitless”. It does have an interesting premise, as the screenplay by Leslie … more
Remakes and re-issues seem to be all the rage these days; and as I have stated before, sometimes they can be necessary and they can be a way to update a story for more modern audiences. It is yet to be argued that the original “Straw Dogs” needed a remake, since it is another one of those movies which was a product of its generation. The direction by Sam Peckinpah was brilliantly simple … more
Star Rating: I described Sam Peckinpah’s 1971 version of Straw Dogs as visceral, disturbing, and unpleasant, and without a doubt, those same qualities apply to Rod Lurie’s 2011 remake. What surprises me is that this new version is far more agreeable, in large part because, while the basic story is exactly the same, the subtexts have been altered in … more
